FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH ALEXANDRIA CROW

ready for your practice to become personal, effective and wise? then spend a weekend with alexandria crow where you'll look at the inner workings of yogic philosophy, the body, and the mind. the practice of yoga is an individual journey that is mostly taught in group format these days. in order to work in a group setting in a safe and effective way, students must look deeply at their body and mind as it relates to each and every class, all with the philosophy of yoga at the root.

we will begin by learning what a yoga practice is all about from a philosophical standpoint, why we're doing asana, and what it aims to teach us. then we'll take a look at the nervous system, the deeper layers of the physical body, and it's structure as a means to asses what's going on both physically and mentally, especially in relation to the fight or flight response most students experience these days and how that impacts the body.

students will then learn from the inside out about how their personal internal structure and range of motion relates to the postures most commonly offered in classes. they will learn their own unique range of motion, how to interpret physical sensation signals, and how their mind interacts the bodily sensations which ultimately can lead to skilled choices which when refined can lead to a productive practice with less injury. each person's skeleton, musculature, connective tissue, lifestyle and injuries cause a unique situation and once uncovered, will create a wiser approach to postures offered in classes.

DAVID REGELIN WEEKEND

DAVID REGELIN WEEKEND

mark your calendars! we couldn't be more excited to announce that david regelin is coming to share a weekend of workshops with us at speakeasy in november! david regelin is a traveling yoga teacher based in New York City. david is a powerful voice, an eloquent and skillful teacher who is sought after for his workshops and teacher's intensives. tori had the opportunity to practice with david at the minneapolis yoga conference and knew right away that you guys need to meet him!

you won't be disappointed by these fun, intelligent classes and workshops.

MULTI-INTENSO

a vigorous vinyasa experience

sets of technical yet exhilarating, complex yet purposeful postural sequences that are mapped out, explained, and broken down into formal details, then put together as a whole while practiced along music. rhythmic cueing, such as a beat or a voice, is known to improve performance because it incites the body's own intelligence to organize and execute movement and form more efficiently.

multi-Intenso is david's signature class from the early athletic vinyasa boom in nyc's yoga scene. now back by popular demand.

when: saturday, november 4th.
time: 11:00am-1:00pm
cost: $40, auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off

HANDSTANDS, HANDSTANDS, AND ALSO HANDSTANDS

transcend the fear and discover the joy of handstands!

improve your handstand technique by learning to:

- use the hand as a map of the entire body, allowing adjustments to the placement of the entire body by sensing where the weight falls into the hand.

- use your legs! the sign of a complete handstand beginner is usually that the legs are dull and lifeless or flailing. learning to use the legs well lightens the load on the upper body allowing for a lighter and more versatile handstand.

- proper wrist angles for a variety handstands types: people often dive headfirst into handstands and eventually have to back away from them because they overstress their wrists. develop the range and stability in the wrists with my *magic* wrist techniques.

- shoulder and rib cage placement. differentiation. hip placement. pelvic tilt. foot articulation. all necessary to learn to lift up to handstand with good form. let's discuss.

- breath and bandha: suspend your disbelief! breath brings bandhas and bandhas are real!

when: saturday, november 4th.
time: 2:30pm-4:30pm
cost: $40, auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off

SKILLFUL VINYASA

embody what you imagine

develop a graceful and safe yoga asana practice by learning how to connect what you visualize with your actual practice.

this vinyasa class strings together both classical and modern postural adaptations into a complete practice. the main idea is to develop a ‘skillful in means’ or ‘effortless effort’ practice where the many small efforts made to pay attention to seemingly small details, lightens the overall effort required to practice and holds the mind in a peaceful and focused state.

learn to:

- mentally “trace” the outer form of your postures to build proprioception.

- improve spatial awareness by extending lines from your body in the direction in which you intend to move.

- visualize the shapes you intend to become in order to foresee how one posture complements another, and how an advanced understanding of basic postures makes advanced postures feel basic.

when: sunday, november 5th.
time: 11:00am-1:00pm
cost: $40, auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off

CENTERING SKILLS

locate your center, and relate to your circumference

all yoga talk aside, we all have an innate understanding that there is a link between our posture and our psychology in that we all respond to one another's body language, more or less consciously, more or less compassionately. this works both ways. we may also influence how we feel by altering how we posture ourselves, and recent findings in neuroscience validate this. since yoga postures are revelatory and dynamic examples of our everyday posture, they offer a range of opportunities to self-adjust. In this way, among others, yoga asana can be seen as a necessary preliminary to meditation practice.

the goal of this class is to learn self-adjusting techniques that can facilitate well-adjusted posture and perspective. simple concepts that describe how the body fits together will be made clear within the context of a sequential asana practice. the goal is to develop the skill to self-adjust.

when: sunday, november 5th.
time: 2:30pm-4:30pm
cost: $40, auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off

YOGA PHYSICS ASANA LAB W/ ALEX CROW

the physical practice of yoga-asana is designed to teach you about yourself and all of your unique qualities, but that’s not always easy in a group class because the poses don’t always fit every one in the same way. each person’s skeleton, musculature, connective tissue, lifestyle and injuries create a unique bio-mechanical range and a somatic imprint that is all too often ignored and "powered" through. once these natural states are uncovered, the awareness will facilitate a wiser approach to the postures being offered within the asana lab as well as better inform how you approach postures in classes outside of the lab.

in the asana lab you will learn how to work with your unique personal physiology as it relates to yoga postures, each and every pose, each and every time. reduce injuries, learn what doesn’t work for you, and most importantly, learn what does work, and how to optimize that discovery to best suit your personal practice.

ASHTANGA YOGA TAKEOVER

ashtanga yoga is a vigorous, flowing style of yoga developed in the 20th century. founded by krishnamacharya and popularized by sri k. pattabhi jois, founder of the ashtanga yoga research institute in mysore, india, this method has been passed to thousands of students, including our teacher for the day, ross stambaugh! ashtanga involves synchronizing breath with progressive and continuous postures, which produces internal heat while detoxifying the body. it builds strength, flexibility, and stamina, while calming the mind and improving overall health.

ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage patanjali in the yoga sutras. according to patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the universal self consists of the following eight spiritual practices: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.

full ashtanga primary series
930-11am

join us as ross takes over our high energy sunday morning flow for a 90-minute ashtanga primary series practice! the room will be heated to 85 degrees as this practice is known for building internal heat quickly and will be counted traditionally in sanskrit, so if you don't want to spend the money flying to india to learn the count, this is the next best thing! you don't need to know all the poses, but to get a feel for what you're getting into before you start, ask tori for a hand out and take the plunge! you won't regret it!

FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH ALEXANDRIA CROW

FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH ALEXANDRIA CROW

ready for your practice to become personal, effective and wise? then spend a weekend with alexandria crow where you'll look at the inner workings of yogic philosophy, the body, and the mind. the practice of yoga is an individual journey that is mostly taught in group format these days. in order to work in a group setting in a safe and effective way, students must look deeply at their body and mind as it relates to each and every class, all with the philosophy of yoga at the root.

we will begin by learning what a yoga practice is all about from a philosophical standpoint, why we're doing asana, and what it aims to teach us. then we'll take a look at the nervous system, the deeper layers of the physical body, and it's structure as a means to asses what's going on both physically and mentally, especially in relation to the fight or flight response most students experience these days and how that impacts the body.

students will then learn from the inside out about how their personal internal structure and range of motion relates to the postures most commonly offered in classes. they will learn their own unique range of motion, how to interpret physical sensation signals, and how their mind interacts the bodily sensations which ultimately can lead to skilled choices which when refined can lead to a productive practice with less injury. each person's skeleton, musculature, connective tissue, lifestyle and injuries cause a unique situation and once uncovered, will create a wiser approach to postures offered in classes.

why pose + how we pose - the deeper layers

why do we do asana? what are we trying to learn and/or access in these postures? in this lecture/discussion we will look at the philosophy behind a yoga practice and how to bring that consciousness and understanding to the physical practice. this awareness when layered upon the poses makes for a complete practice that can bring about transformation and growth both in the physical body and one's approach to how they live.

we will then shift over to the physical and being by looking at how the nervous system affects the body and it's range of motion. students will set a baseline of their personal range of motion and skeletal structure both before and after the transition their nervous system into the parasympathetic system. in addition we will look at the basic biomechanics of all the joint regions in the body in relation to the most common shapes performed in class and discuss the general amount of range that can be expected out of each joint region and what to do if there is limitations.

date: saturday, may 13th, 2017
time: 11am-2pm

cost: $65 (auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off)

feet, legs, knees, hips + spine

the hip and spine perform a biomechanical dance that, when understood, allows a wise approach to postures such as forward folds, arm balances, hip openers and basic backbends. learning ones individual skeletal structure and range of motion in the ankle, knee, hip and spine allows students to approach postures with wisdom and can help prevent unnecessary injuries. understand how the hip's limitation and position impact the spine, learn underlying reasons for the range of motion in the hip and how to keep your lower back and si region safe.

date: saturday, may 13th, 2017
time: 3-6PM
cost: $65 (auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off)

wrists, elbows + shoulders

asana can and does injure students’ wrists, elbows and shoulders far too often, but it’s something that can be avoided. there are some basic skeletal issues that need to be understood in relation to the upper extremities and shoulders as they impact poses where body weight is placed on the hands. Knowing about these issues as well as how the shoulder functions are vital to properly setting up risky weight bearing poses.

date: sunday, may 14th, 2017
time: 11am-2pm
cost: $65 (auto-debit + annual members receive 10% off)

shoulders + spine

in a similar fashion to the hip and spine, the shoulder and spine also participate in a partnership that can help strengthen and stabilize those regions preventing injury when functioning properly. drawing on the information from the earlier modules while adding in newly learned information in this workshop, we will dissect the shoulder girdle and spine as they relate to inversions and backbends that may have previously been out of reach from an understanding of your own unique structure. we will also look at how twists function within the spine and how to approach them with the underlying layers of the body in mind.

date: sunday, may 14th, 2017
time: 3-6pm

ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage patanjali in the yoga sutras. according to patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the universal self consists of the following eight spiritual practices: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.

JOURNEY INTO AYURVEDA

if you’ve been on the path to better health, you may have noticed it isn’t a “one-size fits all” regimen. ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, shows us just that by tuning in to what each individual needs to find balance and thrive!

ayurveda is a system of health that aims to heal the whole person-body, mind, and soul. during this session with joane wire we will look further than food itself and explore how the seasons, elements, and even time of day can impact your health. we will reveal your personal constitution, or dosha, and help you examine your current state for imbalances and understand how to regain a state of equilibrium.

once you’ve gained this foundational knowledge, you’ll be ready for a gentle 3-day cleanse that will restore balance by drawing toxins from your tissue into the digestive tract where they can be eliminated. this spring reset can help with sleep, improve overall digestion, and have you feeling balanced and energized for the warmer months to come!

*workshop includes 3-day cleanse starter kit. cleanse is gluten free + vegan friendly.

The Yamas and Niyamas: Re-designing the good life

The Yamas and Niyamas: Re-designing the Good Life [5 hrs]
The moral issues facing the global community today are vast. I don’t want to keep my blinders on while rain forests disappear, species become extinct, and children starve. But I also don’t want to become overwhelmed, depressed, fatigued, or stop believing in beauty and the best that humanity has to offer. The question becomes how do we take yoga from our mats and use it as a tool for moral imagination and social healing?

In this workshop we will explore how a heartfelt conversation with the yamas and niyamas, the foundational building blocks of the yoga path, can be used to address our personal practice as well as our role in the well-being of the planet. Come explore with me how we can use these ten ethical guidelines to become people who make a difference.

When: Saturday, February 11, 2017
Time: 11:30AM-5:30PM
Cost: $60 (members receive 10% off)

Beliefs: Gateways or Traps to your Yoga Practice

Ever wonder what role your beliefs play in your yoga practice? Do they facilitate your practice or do they actually impair it? Beliefs are powerful because they hide in plain sight and get mistaken for reality. They can easily lay unseen and unexamined; yet they determine the very fabric of our intention and practice.

Come explore the nature of beliefs, where they come from, why we believe what we believe, the purpose of beliefs, and how to discern whether your beliefs are leading you towards your full potential or standing in the way.

When: Sunday, February 12, 2017
Time: 11:30AM-2PM
Cost: $30 (members receive 10% off)

The Mind: Where Entanglement & Freedom Meet [2.5 hrs]

Current research and studies confirm what the yogis have understood for centuries: the mind is the key to suffering and to freedom; it alone has the power to orientate in either direction. Left to ourselves, we become ensnared in habits, thoughts, and conditioning that lead us to unhappiness, even though none of us set out to suffer. Without some understanding of our minds, we can easily end up in despair, depression, and addiction.

Yoga offers a rich understanding of the mind and the practices that purify it. In this workshop, we will explore the crucial steps necessary to train the mind to be our friend and partner in setting a course away from suffering towards the joy and fulfillment we long for.

When: Sunday, February 12, 2017
Time: 3PM-5:30PM
Cost: $30 (members receive 10% off)
