YOU ARE NOT STUCK WORKSHOP

YOU ARE NOT STUCK WORKSHOP

in jobs, habits, families and relationships, sometimes it seems we are hopelessly, impossibly stuck. but “stuck” is only a feeling, not a fact — and it’s most certainly not permanent. the truth is that we all have choices in life, we just have to be brave enough to make them.

please join becky vollmer, e-ryt 500, as she travels to speakeasy for a dynamic day of guided breath, purposeful movement and self-exploration designed to connect to your deepest self and empower your next steps on life’s journey.

in this workshop, we’ll ask ourselves tough questions and peel back the protective layers of ego to get to the raw, honest answers. we’ll bust through the fears that make change so intimidating and begin to feel the power that lies in our choices. and we’ll move through a series of yoga poses designed to soothe and embolden both body and spirit.

“you are not stuck” isn’t just for experienced yogis; all postures can be modified for beginners. this soul-excavating, fear-busting, action-planning session is for anyone ready to live the life they dream of instead of the one they feel stuck in.

there will be plenty of writing, so please bring an open mind, willing heart, paper and pen.

what you’ll experience

· seeing where fear holds you back

· understanding how change can help you heal

· tapping into the courage that already lives inside you

cost: $65 early-bird til october 13. $75 after. space limited, preregistration required!

(auto-debit + annual members receive 20% off full price!)

ASANA LAB W/ ALEX CROW

the physical practice of yoga-asana is designed to teach you about yourself and all of your unique qualities, but that’s not always easy in a group class because the poses don’t always fit every one in the same way. each person’s skeleton, musculature, connective tissue, lifestyle and injuries create a unique bio-mechanical range and a somatic imprint that is all too often ignored and "powered" through. once these natural states are uncovered, the awareness will facilitate a wiser approach to the postures being offered within the asana lab as well as better inform how you approach postures in classes outside of the lab.

in the asana lab you will learn how to work with your unique personal physiology as it relates to yoga postures, each and every pose, each and every time. reduce injuries, learn what doesn’t work for you, and most importantly, learn what does work, and how to optimize that discovery to best suit your personal practice.

this class is drop-in/class pass/membership eligible! preregister on the website to reserve your space.

FROM THE INSIDE OUT - PERSONAL ANATOMY WORKSHOPS WITH ALEXANDRIA CROW

FROM THE INSIDE OUT - PERSONAL ANATOMY WORKSHOPS WITH ALEXANDRIA CROW

  • speakeasy yoga - wayne (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

ready for your practice to become personal, effective and wise? then spend a weekend with alexandria crow where you'll look at the inner workings of yogic philosophy, the body, and the mind. the practice of yoga is an individual journey that is mostly taught in group format these days. in order to work in a group setting in a safe and effective way, students must look deeply at their body and mind as it relates to each and every class, all with the philosophy of yoga at the root.

we will begin by learning what a yoga practice is all about from a philosophical standpoint, why we're doing asana, and what it aims to teach us. then we'll take a look at the nervous system, the deeper layers of the physical body, and it's structure as a means to asses what's going on both physically and mentally, especially in relation to the fight or flight response most students experience these days and how that impacts the body.

students will then learn from the inside out about how their personal internal structure and range of motion relates to the postures most commonly offered in classes. they will learn their own unique range of motion, how to interpret physical sensation signals, and how their mind interacts the bodily sensations which ultimately can lead to skilled choices which when refined can lead to a productive practice with less injury. each person's skeleton, musculature, connective tissue, lifestyle and injuries cause a unique situation and once uncovered, will create a wiser approach to postures offered in classes.

why pose + how we pose - the deeper layers

why do we do asana? what are we trying to learn and/or access in these postures? in this lecture/discussion we will look at the philosophy behind a yoga practice and how to bring that consciousness and understanding to the physical practice. this awareness when layered upon the poses makes for a complete practice that can bring about transformation and growth both in the physical body and one's approach to how they live.

we will then shift over to the physical and being by looking at how the nervous system affects the body and it's range of motion. students will set a baseline of their personal range of motion and skeletal structure both before and after the transition their nervous system into the parasympathetic system. in addition we will look at the basic biomechanics of all the joint regions in the body in relation to the most common shapes performed in class and discuss the general amount of range that can be expected out of each joint region and what to do if there is limitations.

date: saturday, april 28, 2018
time: 12-2:30pm

cost: $50/$45 auto-debit members + annual members

feet, legs, knees, hips + spine

the hip and spine perform a biomechanical dance that, when understood, allows a wise approach to postures such as forward folds, arm balances, hip openers and basic backbends. learning ones individual skeletal structure and range of motion in the ankle, knee, hip and spine allows students to approach postures with wisdom and can help prevent unnecessary injuries. understand how the hip's limitation and position impact the spine, learn underlying reasons for the range of motion in the hip and how to keep your lower back and si region safe.

date: saturday, april 28, 2018
time: 3:30-6pm

cost: $50/$45 auto-debit members + annual members

wrists, elbows + shoulders

asana can and does injure students’ wrists, elbows and shoulders far too often, but it’s something that can be avoided. there are some basic skeletal issues that need to be understood in relation to the upper extremities and shoulders as they impact poses where body weight is placed on the hands. Knowing about these issues as well as how the shoulder functions are vital to properly setting up risky weight bearing poses.

date: sunday, april 29, 2018
time: 12-2:30pm

cost: $50/$45 auto-debit members + annual members

shoulders + spine

in a similar fashion to the hip and spine, the shoulder and spine also participate in a partnership that can help strengthen and stabilize those regions preventing injury when functioning properly. drawing on the information from the earlier modules while adding in newly learned information in this workshop, we will dissect the shoulder girdle and spine as they relate to inversions and backbends that may have previously been out of reach from an understanding of your own unique structure. we will also look at how twists function within the spine and how to approach them with the underlying layers of the body in mind.

date: sunday, april 29, 2018
time: 3:30-6pm

cost: $50/$45 auto-debit members + annual members

AYURVEDA 101 + SPRING CLEANSE

if you’ve been on the path to better health, you may have noticed it isn’t a “one-size fits all” regimen. ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, shows us just that by tuning in to what each individual needs to find balance and thrive!

ayurveda is a system of health that aims to heal the whole person-body, mind, and soul. during this session with yoga teacher and wellness specialist joane wire we will look further than food itself and explore how the seasons, elements, and even time of day can impact your health. we will reveal your personal constitution, or dosha, and help you examine your current state for imbalances and understand how to regain a state of equilibrium.

once you’ve gained this foundational knowledge, you’ll be ready for a gentle 3-day cleanse that will restore balance by drawing toxins from your tissue into the digestive tract where they can be eliminated. this spring reset can help with sleep, improve overall digestion, and have you feeling balanced and energized for the warmer months to come!

*workshop includes 3-day cleanse starter kit. cleanse is gluten free + vegan friendly.

ASHTANGA YOGA PRIMARY SERIES

ashtanga yoga is a vigorous, flowing style of yoga developed in the 20th century. founded by krishnamacharya and popularized by sri k. pattabhi jois, founder of the ashtanga yoga research institute in mysore, india, this method has been passed to thousands of students, including our teacher for the morning, ross stambaugh! ashtanga involves synchronizing breath with progressive and continuous postures, which produces internal heat while detoxifying the body. it builds strength, flexibility, and stamina, while calming the mind and improving overall health.

ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage patanjali in the yoga sutras. according to patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the universal self consists of the following eight spiritual practices: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.

full ashtanga primary series
930-11am

join us as ross takes over our high energy sunday morning flow for a 90-minute ashtanga primary series practice! this practice is known for building internal heat quickly and will be counted traditionally in sanskrit, so if you don't want to spend the money flying to india to learn the count, this is the next best thing! you don't need to know all the poses, but to get a feel for what you're getting into before you start, you can easily find primary series on the internet or use a copy of david swenson's ashtanga yoga practice manual!

yoga asana (postures) is not separate from yoga philosophy, it is simply an extension of it! the way we practice translates to the way we move through life, and the way we move through life makes its way back to the mat. the twists, turns, high points, low points and even upside down points can all be heart-centric and relate to experiences we have in our day to day.

join anna shearer for a 2-hr extended class that will focus on all segments of postures and yogic principles that apply both on and off your mat to help reconnect the dots of how to truly live your yoga in every moment.

expect discussion, movement, and some time to be still and reflect.

cost: $25 (follow link to purchase)

The Yamas & Niyamas: A Tool for Moral Imagination and Social Healing

Where Are We Now?
Saturday 11:30AM-2:00PM
Register Here

Ancient yogic texts speak about times like this:  times of despair, suffering, fear, anxiety, corruption, and lies.  They also speak to how to live in these times in a way that makes a difference not only in our own lives, but in the lives of others.

In this workshop we will explore these yogic concepts in light of our own experience.

The Yamas:  “Can You Just Stop Making Things Worse then They Are?”
Saturday 3:00PM-5:30PM

Register Here

With the events of today, we are encountering a new level of challenge.  It is imperative that we grow ourselves up to meet these challenges.  But how to do this?  The yamas, when understood as a conversation with our life in the context of the world we live in, grows us into deeper skill and discernment of right action.  In this workshop, we’ll explore how this happens.

The Niyamas: New Habits for the Mind
Sunday 11:30AM-2:00PM
Register Here

The niyamas are an invitation to cultivate the finer qualities of being for the mind and heart.  They teach the mind and heart to love tranquility and harmony.  They bring out the inner powers of benevolence, fearlessness, and compassion.  It is from here that we are able to act in the world with unstoppable clarity and courage.

Your Mind on Meditation
Sunday 3:00-5:30PM
Register Here

Meditation is not only the heart of the yoga practice, but yogic texts tell us that in dark times like these, meditation is the most powerful practice we can engage to counteract the dark forces within and around us.  Let’s explore why this is true, what is happening to the body, breath, and mind as we meditate, and what is unleashed within us that makes us a different people.

(All workshops include lecture, discussion, gentle practice.)

Cost:

  • $30 per session.
  • $100 for full weekend if registered by February 1!
  • Annual + Auto-Debit members receive 10% off individual sessions.

ALEXANDRIA CROW WEEKEND

ALEXANDRIA CROW WEEKEND

What are you trying to teach as a yoga teacher, not just on the surface but at the deep reaches? What are you aiming to learn or gain as a student? What is it that motivates you to teach and to practice? How are you teaching that? How do you approach learning the intended outcome?

How do you take where you are as a teacher and/or student and move the needle of intention closer to the outcome? How do you adapt or toss the things that aren’t working, create new practice and teaching techniques for the ones that get tossed? How do you create a practice experience that is effective, personal and your own both as the teacher and the student?

Teaching and practicing yoga in group classes can be a beautiful and inclusive experience of individual self discovery, but it can also be one that feels impersonal, exclusive, and about just trying to keep up to please everyone. The community aspect of a yoga practice is one of the things that a lot of students love and it can be expanded to be more inclusive and personal, leading to more acceptance and ease within each student.

The information and tools that we are trying to teach are sometimes missed and can be difficult to integrate and understand as the student. How do you teach people to make skillful choices as an individual within a group setting? How do you make it safe for students to explore their individuality and their patterns of belief? How do you facilitate student choices that may be different than usual, even confrontational to you as teacher?

Every body is different. Every mind is different. There are so many diverse styles of classes these days. What each person needs in order to learn the concepts presented in yoga is unique. Come spend a weekend with Alexandria Crow taking all these seeming differences of body, mind, and style of class and work to create a classroom experience that is deeply personal and individually effective.

Sessions will include practice, lecture on the topic, mechanics/anatomy of the body, and class planning worksheets and tools.

Yoga: What Are You Aiming For?
Intention + Outcome = Yoga Practice > Yoga as Outcome (Yoga Philosophy & History)
Friday 6:30-9:30PM

What is this word yoga? Where did it come from? How has it morphed and changed over the years through its many shifts and changes? What is a practice and what has it been through the ages?

In this workshop we will look at the history of yoga as it moved through time and cultures to examine what the practices were aiming to teach and how. We will discuss what it is we’re aiming to teach our students today, where those concepts came from historically, and what methods we are currently using. How do you teach and access these concepts currently in the style of classes you teach or take? How do we bring the intention and outcome closer together? How do we allow our students to access that information more readily?

This session will include a short practice and tools to begin to assess where teachers and students are in terms of intention and outcome in their teaching and practice.

Bodies, Joints, Muscles & Poses - Stability, Mobility, Range of Motion & Asana
Intention + Outcome = The Body’s Makeup, Mechanics & Movements > Anatomically Wise and Sustainable Practice Building (Applied Anatomical Concepts For Asana Teachers and Practitioners)
Saturday 11:00AM-2:00PM

How do bodies move? Learn about how muscles work, release and stabilize to move the body and hold it in position. How far should joints move? When is it not enough and when do they go too far? We will look at the different variables involved in stability, mobility, range of motion and the postures that are taught in most yoga classes today. We will debunk the concept of stretching and flexibility and rebuild those components in ways that are aligned with how the muscular and fascia systems work. Skeletal variations and differences will be discussed in order to set up postures in a way that is wise for each individual. We will look at poses through the lens of muscular activation, release, stability, and potential counter productive sensations, creating a sensory experience in class that invites each student to use the poses and movements as a tool for personal learning, exploration and skillful choice making.

Fire - Physically Demanding Hard Work With A Twist
Intention + Outcome = Work the Body Wisely > Calm The Mind (Vinyasa/Power/Flow/Hatha)
Saturday 3:00-6:00PM

These are some of the most popular classes at this point in time, and yet some of the most difficult within which to achieve the outcome that a yoga practice intends philosophically. How do you get students to work hard, move, and do it with ethical integrity? This session will contain a practice based around the vinyasa/power model that takes individuals and personal choice into account, allows for exploration and discovery, is physically demanding but also limits the risks and pitfalls in classes today.

We will deconstruct the postures and activities used during the practice from an anatomical and biomechanical standpoint. Functional range of motion vs limited range vs hypermobility will be discussed as they are important physical considerations to take into account within this type of class. The expectations of students and teachers in relation to this class style will also be discussed and alternatives that offer the same outcome without the problematic components will be offered in an effort to marry the intention and outcome of these classes in relation to a yoga practice more closely than is often possible.

Calm - Quieting the Noisy Body/Mind Loop
Intention + Outcome = Balance the Nerves > Calm The Mind (Restoratives/Yin/Therapeutics)
Sunday 11:00AM-2:00PM

The nervous system states, skeletal range, and basic biomechanics in relation to commonly taught restorative/ yin/therapeutic classes. We will explore how the nervous system affects the body, its range of motion, the mind, and more.

There will be an hour long assessment inventory and practice where students will set a baseline of their personal range of motion and skeletal structure both before and after a class aimed at calming and balancing their nervous system.

The practice will be followed by a deconstruction and reconstruction of common postures within these styles in an effort to have them function more effectively and to lessen injury and/or calm a heightened nervous system. We will explore the joint’s range of motion in relation to poses, and find ways to create postures that fall within the functional range in an effort to create a sustainable and calming class outcome.

Class Planning Laboratory - Purposeful Creativity
Intention + Outcome = Lesson Plans For Personal Exploration & Discovery > Students Who Know What Is Wise For Them & How To Advance (Sequencing and Formatting Classes)
Sunday 3:00-6:00PM

Class planning can be difficult, daunting and monotonous. In this session you will introduce how to plan classes using what you’ve learned no matter what the style or level. Students and teachers will work through planning a class from start to finish, using class planning tools designed to give students a personal experience in a group setting so that they learn to approach the topic being presented in a way that is skillful and wise for them. Participants will then be led through the class that was created in an effort to experience the concepts presented and developed.

Participants will learn how to create class plans that turn classes into a personal laboratory that is inclusive, invites inquiry, creates a safe place for exploration and when necessary allows difficult choices to be made by students so that they learn what is wise for them which can translate clearly to applying yoga off the mat as well. Class planning worksheets will be provided as well as emailed afterwards for continued use.

Cost:

  • $265 for full Weekend before January 12!
  • After January 12 cost for full weekend is $295.

YOGA PHYSICS ASANA LAB W/ ALEX CROW

YOGA PHYSICS ASANA LAB W/ ALEX CROW

the physical practice of yoga-asana is designed to teach you about yourself and all of your unique qualities, but that’s not always easy in a group class because the poses don’t always fit every one in the same way. each person’s skeleton, musculature, connective tissue, lifestyle and injuries create a unique bio-mechanical range and a somatic imprint that is all too often ignored and "powered" through. once these natural states are uncovered, the awareness will facilitate a wiser approach to the postures being offered within the asana lab as well as better inform how you approach postures in classes outside of the lab.

in the asana lab you will learn how to work with your unique personal physiology as it relates to yoga postures, each and every pose, each and every time. reduce injuries, learn what doesn’t work for you, and most importantly, learn what does work, and how to optimize that discovery to best suit your personal practice.

this class is drop-in/class pass/membership eligible! preregister on the schedule tab to reserve your space.

class is not actively heated.
