LIVESTREAM: YOGA PHILOSOPHY IN PRACTICE & ACTION - Teaching Yoga’s Richness On The Mat

  • speakeasy yoga - wayne 204 Wayne Avenue Dayton, OH, 45402 United States (map)

What you are trying to teach as a yoga teacher, under the surface of and through the poses in class? What text(s) did those philosophical concepts come from historically? How do you as a teacher clearly articulate those concepts and engage student’s understanding in a way that isn’t superimposed or doesn’t feel preachy and is instead directly experienced?

Spend two days diving into two important classical yoga texts to refining your understand and clarifying the meaning and purpose of the concepts. With the traditional teachings as a guide we’ll compare them to your current class structures and methods unearthing areas of confusion or omission. The information gained will then be used to develop interactive activities that communicate these concepts to students in a direct, personal, and transformative way resulting in classes where the message that yoga is more than just the poses is understood and embodied.

*ALL SESSIONS WILL BE HELD VIA SPEAKEASY LIVESTREAM!

Day One - The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali

The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali has become the most commonly utilized classical text about yoga used in Western yoga teacher trainings. We will start by investigating the historical use and the intentions behind the teachings contained within this text, followed by an engaging and interactive philosophy lecture and group discussion. Based on the understanding gained, we will spend the afternoon breaking down current class structures such as sequencing and cuing to look for opportunities to educate students about their relationship to the philosophical themes. You will be offered activities and interactive classroom techniques that ask you to interact with the key concepts yourself after which you will be offered tools that help you to learn how to develop techniques and educational tools of your own for your classes and students.

Day Two - The Bhagavad GĪtā

We will begin by historically contextualizing the use and the intentions behind the teachings contained in the rich and beautiful text, The Bhagavad Gītā, followed by a philosophy lecture and group discussion about the concepts contained within this text. Based on the understanding gained, we will spend the afternoon breaking down current class structures such as sequencing and cuing to look for opportunities to educate students about their relationship to the philosophical themes.
